For a first fishing trip in Australia, check the licence or permit before buying extra tackle. The useful beginner kit is simple: a rod-and-line setup, a ruler, fish ID help, pliers, a line cutter, a small tackle box and safety gear that matches the place.

Do not start with nets, pots, traps, spears, set lines, lobster, abalone, marron or boat-specific gear. Those methods often trigger extra rules, seasons, marking requirements, access checks or licences.

Fish ID before keeping catch

New anglers often buy lures first and a ruler later. Reverse that order. A ruler, fish ID page and release tools do more to keep the trip legal than a bigger lure tray.

If you cannot identify the fish, release it. Protected species, no-take species, closed seasons, undersize fish and possession limits still apply when you have a licence or when you are exempt from paying.

Safety is part of the kit

Check safety rules for the place and method. A calm jetty session, rock platform, powered boat, remote NT access area and SA reservoir reserve are different risk profiles.

Pack water, sun protection, footwear, first aid and a charged phone. For boating, rock fishing or exposed coast trips, check the official state safety requirements before you go and do not rely on a generic national rule.
