Which app to use

The best fishing app in Australia is the official tool for the jurisdiction you are fishing, not the highest-rated generic app. Use official apps for rules, limits, maps, closures, reporting and licence links, then keep the separate licence or permit proof required by that state or activity.

Australia does not have one national recreational fishing app or one national fishing licence wallet. A NSW tool will not prove a Victorian licence, a Queensland rule app will not replace SIPS proof, and a WA rules map will not replace an activity licence.

Official app and rule-tool map

Jurisdiction Official tool to start with Best use Licence or proof caveat
NSW FishSmart and Service NSW digital credentials Rules, limits, maps, FADs, reefs, marine parks, tides, weather and fee payment links. Carry or show the NSW fishing fee receipt or recognised digital credential when required.
Victoria Vic Fishing app and Service Victoria digital RFL Species ID, limits, equipment, seasons, marine park boundaries, licence links and reporting. The digital RFL is a Service Victoria licence proof, separate from general rule browsing.
Queensland Qld Fishing 2.0 Rules, "can I fish here" checks, catch records, reminders, FADs, boat facilities, SIPS links and limited offline use. Queensland has no general recreational licence, but SIPS proof is still separate for listed stocked impoundments.
Western Australia rules.fish and DPIRD pages WA species, location and rule checks backed by DPIRD. Use DPIRD or WA Government licence pathways for activity licences.
South Australia SA Fishing app Species limits, closure maps, aquatic reserves, reporting tools and fishing diary. SA Water reservoir permits and ID sit outside a general app-only answer.
Tasmania inland InFish Inland waters, access maps, stocking, weather, Inland Fishing Code, diary and licence link. Inland licences are different from sea licence activities.
Tasmania sea Fishing Tas app and Fishing Tasmania pages Sea rules and activity reporting, including rock lobster catch reporting. Sea licence activities and reporting rules are not the same as inland angling.
Northern Territory NT Government web tools Rules, possession limits, specific areas and Aboriginal land access. Do not look for a digital NT recreational fishing licence; check access permission where needed.
ACT ACT Government and Parks ACT pages ACT public-water rules, parks information and Googong checks. ACT public waters and Googong do not have the same licence answer.

NSW: FishSmart plus licence proof

FishSmart is the official NSW DPIRD app for recreational fishing information. It is useful for bag and size limits, gear rules, closures, maps and reporting. NSW fee payment and digital credential paths sit with Service NSW.

Do not assume the rule app alone is your licence proof. If you need to show proof, use the NSW receipt or the digital licence credential recognised by Service NSW. Use NSW apply and fishing licence proof before fishing.

Victoria: Vic Fishing plus digital RFL

The Vic Fishing app is the official VFA rule companion. It helps with species, limits, equipment, seasons, marine protected areas, licence links and reporting.

The Victorian digital fishing licence is handled through Service Victoria. Keep the RFL proof available as a digital licence, email or card depending on how you purchased. The rule app is useful, but it should not be confused with permission to fish in another state.

Queensland: Qld Fishing 2.0 and SIPS proof

Qld Fishing 2.0 is the official Queensland tool for rules, maps, stocked impoundments, catch records, reminders and trip planning. The official help pages also explain that some functions can be used offline, while maps, location and live information can still depend on device settings and network access.

Queensland has no general recreational fishing licence, but SIPS applies to adults line-fishing listed stocked impoundments. Keep the SIPS email, SMS or paper receipt as proof. Use Queensland SIPS before fishing dams and weirs.

WA and SA: rule tools first, licence path second

For Western Australia, use rules.fish and DPIRD pages as the official rule path. WA licence decisions are activity-based, so keep the DPIRD or WA Government licence page separate from general rule browsing.

For South Australia, the SA Fishing app is the official PIRSA app for species, limits, closure maps, aquatic reserves and reporting. South Australia does not have a statewide general recreational fishing licence, but SA Water reservoirs can require a permit and identification.

Tasmania: keep inland and sea separate

Tasmania is split. InFish is the Inland Fisheries Service app for inland waters, access, stocking, weather, diary and licence links. Fishing Tasmania handles sea fishing information and the Fishing Tas app supports sea fishing tools and rock lobster catch reporting.

If a trip moves from trout water to rock lobster, abalone, scallop, nets or set lines, restart the check. Inland app confidence does not answer sea licence activities.

NT and ACT: official web pages still count

Not every useful official tool is an app. NT recreational fishing is rules-first, with access checks for Aboriginal land and some intertidal waters. ACT public waters do not need a general ACT recreational fishing licence, but Googong points back to NSW-linked fishing rules and proof.

Use NT Aboriginal land access and Googong Reservoir checks before relying on a simple "no app needed" answer.

App setup before the trip

Step Why it helps
Install the state app before leaving reception. Maps, app stores and account setup are easier before you are at the water.
Save licence proof separately. A rule app and a licence receipt can be different files or systems.
Download or screenshot official receipts where allowed. Poor reception and flat batteries are common proof problems.
Turn on location only when useful. Location-based tools need permission, but official rules still control the answer.
Check the official page after major updates. Apps can lag behind rule changes, closures or app-store update cycles.

In short

Use official fishing apps as rule tools, not as a substitute for every licence or permit proof. Match the app to the state, save proof separately and re-check the official page when the water, activity or species changes.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is there one official fishing app for all of Australia?

No. Use the official app, rule map or government page for the state, territory, water and activity you are fishing.

Can an app replace my fishing licence proof?

Only if the official licence system says that form of digital proof is accepted. Rule apps and licence wallets are not always the same thing.

Which official apps should beginners start with?

Start with NSW FishSmart, the Vic Fishing app, Qld Fishing 2.0, WA rules.fish, SA Fishing, Tasmania InFish or Fishing Tas, and official NT or ACT web pages where there is no clear licence app.
