WA Boat Fishing Licence Guide

When RFBL applies

If a powered boat is part of the trip, start with Western Australia's Recreational Fishing from Boat Licence (RFBL). DPIRD lists AUD 40 for 12 months before concessions or multi-activity discounts.

The important detail is the trigger. RFBL is not just a price line; it can apply when you fish from a powered boat and when a powered boat is used to transport catch or fishing gear to or from a land-based fishing location such as an island or sandbar.

Boat limits and who is covered

For WA boat trips, also check how boat limits are calculated. A current RFBL does not let a group ignore bag, size or possession limits, and it does not cover everyone on board for every activity. If a boat carries fish taken by multiple people, confirm the current DPIRD wording on licensed fishers and boat possession before travelling.

RFBL does not replace special licences

RFBL is only one Western Australia recreational licence category. You may still need a separate activity licence if the trip includes:
