Queensland Fishing Rules: Limits, Closures and Protected Species

Rules after the permit question

Queensland fishing rules are the trip-level check after the licence question. A no-statewide-licence answer or a SIPS permit does not decide whether you can keep a fish, use a gear method, fish a closed water or retain a protected species.

Tidal, freshwater or SIPS?

Start by identifying the water. Tidal fishing often sends you to the tidal limits table. Freshwater rivers, dams and impoundments may send you to freshwater limits, closures and SIPS checks. A SIPS water adds a permit step, but it does not remove the species-limit or closure checks.

Pre-trip rule checklist

1. Identify the water as tidal, freshwater or a SIPS impoundment.
2. Search the official limit table for the exact species name.
3. Check whether the limit is a possession limit, not just a same-day target.
4. Check closures before choosing a date.
5. Check gear rules before carrying pots, nets, traps, crab gear, multiple lines or spears.
6. Check protected and no-take species before retaining an unusual catch.
7. Carry SIPS proof if the water is a designated SIPS impoundment and you are 18 or over.
