Inland angling checks
Any person aged 14 or over generally needs a current Inland Fisheries Service angling licence to fish with a rod, reel or line in Tasmania inland waters. The official wording includes farm dams on private property, so do not treat a private dam as licence-free unless an official exception applies.
Under 14 anglers usually do not need an inland licence when using one rod at an open inland water. Ages 14 to 17 need a junior licence, currently free.
2026-27 inland fees
| Inland question | Answer to verify |
|---|---|
| Adult season licence | 2026-27 examples include AUD 96 for 1 rod and AUD 115.50 for 2 rods. |
| Short trip | IFS lists 28-day, 7-day and 48-hour options, with pricing by rod count. |
| Junior aged 14 to 17 | Junior licences are currently free, but the angler still needs the licence. |
| Under 14 | Usually no inland licence when using one rod at an open inland water. |
| Whitebait or special method | Check the separate official pathway instead of assuming ordinary angling rules apply. |
| Common 2026-27 product | Published example |
|---|---|
| Adult 1 season, 1 rod | AUD 96.00 |
| Adult 1 season, 2 rods | AUD 115.50 |
| 28 days, 1 rod | AUD 76.00 |
| 7 days, 1 rod | AUD 49.00 |
| 48 hours, 1 rod | AUD 29.00 |
| Junior 14 to 17, season | AUD 0.00 |
2026-27 season dates
IFS season dates are not the same as buying a calendar-year licence. For the 2026-27 season, official IFS season guidance includes:
| Inland season check | Official date |
|---|---|
| Most waters open | Saturday 1 August 2026 |
| Designated rainbow trout waters open | Saturday 3 October 2026 |
| Most waters close | Sunday 2 May 2027 |
| Designated rainbow and extended waters close | Sunday 30 May 2027 |
Always check the exact water because lake, river, private fishery, rainbow trout water and extended-water rules can differ.
Where to buy or renew
Use the IFS buy/renew pathway or Service Tasmania's angling licence service. Search results often take users straight to an apply/renew page, but you should still choose the right product first: season, 28-day, 7-day, 48-hour, rod count, concession or junior.
Water-specific rules
The inland licence does not decide every rule. Before fishing, check IFS Waters A-Z, the Inland Fishing Code, allowed angling methods and the InFish app for the exact water.
| Water or rule issue | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Farm dams on private property | Inland licence wording can still apply; check official private-fishery exceptions before assuming otherwise. |
| Registered private fisheries | Check the registered private fishery wording and site conditions. |
| Native-fish specified waters | Do not apply ordinary trout-water rules without checking the water entry. |
| Estuary or river mouth | Use the IFS seaward limit before deciding whether the water is inland or marine. |
| Bag, size, method or season | Use IFS Waters A-Z for the exact water, not a statewide shortcut. |

Keep in mind
For Tasmania inland fishing, choose the IFS licence product by age, duration, rod count and water. Then check season dates and the exact water before fishing; an inland licence is not a sea licence and does not override local IFS rules.
