Rules and access first

The NT is a rules-first jurisdiction for recreational fishing. You normally do not buy a general recreational fishing licence, but you still need to check what you can keep, where you can fish and what gear you can use.

Possession limits

Start with the NT possession-limit page before keeping fish, especially on remote trips where fish may be stored, transported or kept away from your permanent residence. Do not rely on a single "bag limit" memory from another state; NT uses its own possession framework and species tables.

Gear and method checks

Line fishing is only one part of the NT rules picture. If you carry pots, dillies, nets or similar equipment, open the official gear page before the trip. Check the allowed gear type, number, markings, permitted areas and whether the method is suitable for the water you plan to fish.

Area and access checks

Some NT waters need a location-specific check after the species and gear checks. This includes specific fishing areas, reef fish protection areas, parks, reserves, closed waters and Aboriginal land or intertidal access.

Safety is separate from licence status

The no-general-licence answer does not cover boating law, weather, remote-area planning or crocodile safety. Treat those as separate go/no-go checks, especially on tidal rivers, floodplains and remote coastal trips.
