There is no separate "Albany fishing licence" for King George Sound, Princess Royal Harbour or Oyster Harbour. Western Australia uses activity-based recreational fishing licences.

For ordinary land-based line fishing, the answer is often no separate WA activity licence. If a powered boat is involved, start with the Recreational Fishing from Boat Licence. If the plan includes nets, rock lobster, abalone, marron or other licensed activities, use the matching WA licence pathway before fishing.

King George Sound is the broad open-water setting, while Princess Royal Harbour and Oyster Harbour add navigation, channel, ramp, foreshore and waterway questions. King George Sound has a local closure that deserves a separate check: DPIRD lists the HMAS Perth wreck site as closed to fishing within 250 metres of the specified wreck-site coordinates. Do not use a general Albany licence answer as permission to fish a wreck mark.

Netting is another place-specific trap. The WA netting guide can treat Princess Royal Harbour differently from ocean waters, port areas or unnamed waters. A recreational net fishing licence does not open every harbour, channel or shore; check the current netting guide before carrying a set, haul or throw net.

RFBL and activity licences

RFBL is the key purchase trap for visitors. It is not an Albany local fee; it is the WA powered-boat fishing licence category. Check it if a powered boat is used to fish, crab, spear, prawn, catch octopus or transport catch or fishing gear to or from a land-based location.

The RFBL does not replace other WA activity licences. Nets, rock lobster, abalone and marron each have separate licence and rule checks. Carry proof for the exact activity you are doing, not just the licence you happened to buy.

Parks, marine protected areas and safety

Torndirrup National Park, whaling-station lookouts and nearby coast can make Albany fishing feel like a scenic shore trip, but access and safety are separate from fishing legality. Check DBCA park information before using trails, cliffs, rock platforms or beaches.

If the trip moves near marine protected areas or named reserves, use DPIRD's marine protected area guidance and current maps before fishing. Do not estimate a zone boundary from a scenic lookout or a phone pin.

Albany weather can change quickly. King George Sound can be sheltered compared with the Southern Ocean, but harbour exits, swell, wind, cold water and rock ledges still need a trip-day safety decision.

The port and aquaculture layers are also practical. Southern Ports material controls Albany port navigation, and port-wharf or ship-side fishing should not be treated as ordinary foreshore access. Buying and proof
