South-west freshwater checks

Western Australia's south-west freshwater angling licence is regional, not a statewide freshwater licence for every water in WA.

Use this page when the trip is freshwater angling in WA's south-west area. DPIRD's freshwater guide frames the area around waters south of Greenough, at about 29 degrees south, and above tidal influence, including relevant rivers, tributaries, dams and lakes. The standard published licence fee is AUD 50 for 12 months before concessions; anglers under 16 do not require this freshwater licence.

Does this freshwater licence apply?

Question	What to check
Is the water in the south-west freshwater licence area?	Confirm the current DPIRD map or guide before fishing.
Is the water above tidal influence?	Use DPIRD's freshwater guide rather than guessing from the name of the river or estuary.
Are you under 16?	Under-16 anglers do not require the south-west freshwater angling licence.
Are you fishing from a powered vessel?	If freshwater angling is the only fishing activity on the boat, DPIRD's freshwater guide says RFBL is not needed; otherwise re-check RFBL and other activity licences.
Are you also using nets or targeting rock lobster, abalone or marron?	Those are separate WA activity licence categories; use WA special licences.
Are you buying more than one WA licence type?	Check the 10% multi-activity discount before checkout if the licences are bought in one transaction.

Freshwater-only powered-vessel exception

This is the bit people often get wrong. A powered vessel does not automatically mean RFBL on a south-west freshwater angling trip. DPIRD's freshwater guide says RFBL is not needed when a powered vessel is used for freshwater angling, as long as that is the only fishing activity on the boat.

If the same trip includes boat-based saltwater fishing, transport of catch or fishing gear to or from a land-based fishing location, nets, or listed species activity, go back to the WA boat fishing licence guide or WA special licences before assuming the freshwater exception covers it.

For WA freshwater, check the south-west area and tidal-influence boundary first. Under-16 anglers do not need the south-west freshwater angling licence, and a powered vessel has a narrow freshwater-only RFBL exception. Then verify the current waterway and species rules before fishing.
