Cairns and Trinity Inlet Fishing Rules 2026: Queensland Licence, Barramundi and Crab Limits

For ordinary shore, wharf, kayak or boat line fishing around Cairns, Trinity Inlet and Trinity Bay, Queensland does not use a general recreational fishing licence checkout. The practical answer is not "buy a Cairns licence"; it is "check the Queensland rules for the exact place, gear and species."

The paid Queensland pathway that causes confusion is SIPS. SIPS is for listed stocked impoundments. Tinaroo Falls Dam is on the SIPS list, but Trinity Inlet, Cairns wharves and nearby tidal estuary waters are not SIPS waters.

Tidal species and gear

Queensland tidal fishing rules matter more than the licence question. In tidal waters, recreational line fishing is generally limited to 3 fishing lines and 6 hooks in total, and the fisher must stay with the lines.

Barramundi is the headline Cairns risk. As last verified on 2026-08-05, Queensland tidal barramundi rules use a 58 cm minimum, 120 cm maximum and a possession limit of 5 per person, with 10 per boat when 2 or more people are on board. The next East Coast barramundi closure runs from 2026-11-01 to 2027-01-31, so do not target or keep barra in that period unless current Queensland closure material changes.

Crabs need the same live check. Mud crabs have a 15 cm minimum and females are no-take. Blue swimmer crabs have an 11.5 cm minimum and females are no-take. Do not keep crab claws without the body, and tag pots, dillies and floats as Queensland gear rules require.

Trinity Inlet and Trinity Bay

Trinity Inlet is a declared Fish Habitat Area. That does not automatically make ordinary line fishing a no-take activity, but it does add a habitat layer around mangroves, seagrass, saltmarsh, banks and bait-collecting methods. Before digging bait, setting crab gear or using anything beyond rod and line, check the Fish Habitat Area page and the current Fisheries Declaration.

Trinity Bay is also listed in Queensland's net-free zone material. Treat that as a commercial netting rule unless the current page says otherwise. It is not a blanket ban on lawful recreational line fishing, but recreational nets, cast nets, scoop nets and other methods still need their own gear and closed-water checks.

If the trip moves from inner Cairns waters toward the reef, islands or the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, add the marine park zoning map before fishing. A legal catch in Trinity Inlet is not proof that the same method is legal on a reef or island mark.

Croc Country check

Cairns waterways, beaches, boat ramps and estuaries sit in Croc Country. The Queensland Be Crocwise guidance is not a fishing licence rule, but it changes how you should plan shore spots, crab pots, fish cleaning, kayak launches and night sessions.

Keep fish frames and bait away from the water's edge, stay back from banks and ramps, avoid leaning over boats or jetties, and do not treat a familiar local spot as low risk just because it is busy.

Buying and proof

For a standard Cairns or Trinity Inlet tidal trip, there may be no purchase receipt to carry because there is no general Queensland recreational fishing licence. Carry or save the official Queensland rules, SIPS locations, Trinity Inlet Fish Habitat Area page, marine park zoning page if relevant, and any local access notes.

If your plan changes to a listed stocked impoundment such as Tinaroo Falls Dam, use the SIPS checkout for that dam. Do not buy SIPS for Trinity Inlet saltwater fishing.
