Swan River licence answer
Do not buy a "Swan River fishing licence." Western Australia uses activity-based recreational licences, not a separate Swan River checkout.
For ordinary land-based line fishing in the Swan-Canning Estuary, the first paid-licence answer is often no separate WA activity licence. That does not make the trip rule-free. Powered boats, freshwater boundaries, nets, crabs, prawns, bream, wire-trace rules, closures and health advice can all change the practical answer.

Swan-Canning boundary
DBCA's Swan Canning Riverpark material is useful because the river system changes character along the trip. DBCA describes the riverpark as extending upstream to Walyunga National Park on the Swan River and Kent Street Weir on the Canning River.
For fishing licences, the key is not only the river name. If the plan moves above tidal influence in the south-west freshwater licence area, use the WA south-west freshwater guide before treating it as the same estuary trip.

Do not carry a net or shark-style rig because it worked somewhere else in WA. Swan-Canning local rules can override a generic saltwater habit.
Crab and prawn cautions
Crabbing and prawning are common Swan River searches, but they are not just licence questions. A shore-based crab trip may not need a crab licence, while a powered-boat crab trip can still need RFBL. The catch rules, gear rules and health advice then sit on top.

Water quality and eating catch
Licence status does not decide whether seafood is safe to eat. DPIRD's Alexandrium advice and DBCA's Swan-Canning water-quality monitoring are the main trip checks when algae, shellfish, crabs or river health are part of the plan.
Follow official warnings for mussels, blue swimmer crab cleaning and algal bloom signs. HealthyWA also advises avoiding water affected by algal blooms and following warning signs.
