Lake Tinaroo permit check
Lake Tinaroo is the recreation name many visitors use, while the official SIPS page lists Tinaroo Falls Dam. For adult line fishing, the answer is clear: Tinaroo Falls Dam is a Queensland Stocked Impoundment Permit Scheme water.
People aged 18 or over need a current SIPS permit when line-fishing the impoundment. People under 18 do not need SIPS, but they still need to follow Queensland freshwater limits, closures, gear rules and local access conditions.

Species and limits
Queensland's Tinaroo Falls Dam SIPS page lists stocked species including barramundi and sooty grunter. Treat that list as a stocking and permit cue, not as permission to keep every fish.
As last verified on 2026-08-05, Queensland freshwater limits list barramundi with a 58 cm minimum, 120 cm maximum and ordinary possession limits that can be affected by boat and closed-season rules. Queensland legislation and fisheries material also treat Tinaroo Dam as a prescribed barramundi waterway, so check the current Fishing 2.0 app or official closure material before targeting or keeping barramundi around a closure period.
Sooty grunter also needs a current freshwater lookup. Queensland's freshwater table lists a 28 cm minimum and a combined grunter possession limit. Do not mix an old stocked-dam brochure with today's limit table.
Gear and dam access
Freshwater gear rules are not the same as Queensland tidal fishing. Check the current equipment page before using multiple lines, lures, bait, traps, nets or anything beyond simple rod-and-line fishing.
Sunwater adds the dam-owner layer. Lake Tinaroo boating is permitted, but fishers must follow signs, avoid the dam wall exclusion area, and treat submerged trees, changing water levels, inflows, floating debris and spillway releases as trip-day hazards. Sunwater also states that fishing is not allowed on or near the dam wall, so do not treat the wall as a convenient platform.

Parks, camping and Croc Country
Danbulla National Park and State Forest sit around Lake Tinaroo, so camping and visitor access are separate from the fishing permit. Check Queensland Parks camping, alerts, road conditions and visitor safety before treating a multi-day fishing trip as booked.
Lake Tinaroo is in Far North Queensland. Use Queensland Be Crocwise guidance for fishing and boating safety, but do not turn that into a Tinaroo-specific sighting claim unless an official local alert says so. The practical rule is simple: clean fish away from the water's edge, keep bait and frames secured, stay back from banks and ramps, and be cautious at dawn, dusk and night.

Buy SIPS through Queensland's official pathway, by phone or at listed Australia Post outlets. One SIPS permit covers all SIPS impoundments for its valid period; it is not a separate Tinaroo-only permit.
Do not buy SIPS for a Cairns or Trinity Inlet tidal session. Do buy or carry SIPS if the trip moves to Tinaroo Falls Dam and you are 18 or over and line-fishing.
