Victoria Fishing Licence and Beginner Gear Checklist

Before buying Victoria gear

Victoria generally requires a recreational fishing licence for anglers aged 18 to 69 unless an official exemption applies. Check Victoria exemptions and current Victoria fees before buying a licence or gearing up for a trip.

After the licence or exemption answer, choose a modest rod-and-line kit and use the VFA guide or app for the species, water, date and method.

Age or exemption	Under-18 and 70-plus anglers, Victorian Seniors Card holders or interstate equivalents, and other listed groups may not need a paid licence.
Proof	A 3-day or 28-day licence can be saved to a Service Victoria account or kept as emailed licence details. For 1-year and 3-year licences, choose digital proof or a plastic card; plastic cards can take up to four weeks by post.
Water and species	Pier, estuary, inland and stocked-water trips can have different limits or closed seasons.
Method	Rod-and-line is the clean beginner path; nets, spears and specialist methods need VFA equipment checks.
Border water	A Victorian RFL does not automatically cover NSW water, the Murray River or every border-water exception.

Marine national parks or sanctuaries	Some places can restrict or close fishing regardless of licence status.
Murray River or Lake Hume	The Murray River is NSW water. Lake Hume has a specific reciprocal arrangement, so do not generalise that exception to Lake Mulwala or the rest of the Murray.
