Gippsland Lakes Fishing Licence 2026: Victorian RFL, Bream Rules and Boat Access

The Gippsland Lakes use the Victorian Recreational Fishing Licence pathway. Most anglers aged 18 to 69 need an RFL unless an official exemption applies, whether the trip is shore fishing, jetty fishing, boat fishing, bait collection, prawning or another covered recreational method.

Buy through Service Victoria or a VFA authorised agent, and carry accepted proof such as the digital licence, licence email, plastic licence or authorised-agent handwritten licence. If you are exempt, carry the card or proof that matches the official exemption wording.

Black bream and estuary rules

Gippsland Lakes is not a generic Victorian saltwater page. It is a large estuary system around Lakes Entrance, Lake King, Lake Victoria, Lake Wellington and connected channels, with rules that need to be checked at the water and species level.

Use VFA's Gippsland Lakes guide with the Victorian Recreational Fishing Guide and official app before keeping fish or choosing gear. The local guide and fishery plan are the best places to start for lake-specific species, locations, stewardship notes and any current changes.

Black bream is the water-specific rule to treat carefully. As checked on 5 August 2026, the 2025 Gippsland Lakes Black Bream Notice set a 38 cm maximum size and a daily catch and possession limit of 7 black bream for Gippsland Lakes and tributaries, while the general bream minimum-size rule still needed to be checked. VFA also had a 2026 consultation open, so recheck the current notice before publishing dates or keeping a borderline fish after early September 2026.

Parks, ramps and shoreline access

Parks Victoria's Gippsland Lakes Coastal Park covers parts of the shoreline system between the lakes and Ninety Mile Beach. The Lakes National Park and Rotamah Island add another access layer, and nearby Ninety Mile Beach Marine National Park needs its own boundary check. Treat park access as separate from the RFL.

Before fishing from a beach, camp area, picnic area, jetty, walking track or shoreline reserve, check local signs and the current Parks Victoria page for access, camping, dogs, fires, seasonal closures and any temporary warnings. Parks Victoria lists lake fishing from boat, bank and jetty as common around the Gippsland Lakes Coastal Park, but that does not remove VFA rules or park-specific restrictions.

For boats and kayaks, add Safe Transport Victoria waterway rules before launching. The local Port of Gippsland Lakes has specific speed, water-skiing and vessel-prohibited areas, so use the current rules and ramp information instead of assuming one lakes-wide boating answer.

Food and water-quality checks

For eating catch, use VFA food-safety guidance and the current species rules rather than old local tables. EPA Victoria's water-quality tools are useful for checking environmental and recreational-water context, but they are not a licence receipt or a seafood clearance.

After storms, floods, algal warnings or pollution notices, do a fresh official check before keeping fish, prawns or shellfish, especially if the catch will be shared with children, pregnant people or visitors who did not see the local warning signs.

Buying and proof

Buy the Victorian RFL through Service Victoria or an authorised VFA agent. Choose the duration that fits the trip, then keep proof available while fishing.

If the Gippsland Lakes trip is part of a wider Victorian road trip, one valid RFL can cover the licence layer across Victorian marine, estuarine and inland recreational fishing, but the local rules still change by water. Do not copy this lakes checklist to Lake Eildon, Port Phillip Bay or another estuary without a separate rule check.
