D'Entrecasteaux Channel and Bruny Island Fishing Licence 2026: TAS Sea Rules

Channel licence answer

For ordinary marine rod-and-line fishing around D'Entrecasteaux Channel, Bruny Island, Kettering, Margate, Dennes Point, Adventure Bay, Cloudy Bay Lagoon and nearby jetties, Tasmania usually does not require a recreational sea fishing licence.

That narrow answer does not cover every activity. You need the relevant Tasmania sea licence if the trip changes to rock lobster pots, rings or diving, abalone, scallops, graball nets, mullet nets, beach seine nets or set lines. Service Tasmania and Fishing Tasmania are the purchase pathways for those sea licences.

Choose your Bruny and Channel pathway

Shark refuge and no-take reserves

The local fingerprint of this trip is the D'Entrecasteaux Channel Shark Refuge Area. Fishing Tasmania includes D'Entrecasteaux Channel, North West Bay River and Huon River in that refuge. Sharks, skates and rays are not a take target there, except elephantfish under the current official wording.

The South East net-and-line rules add method restrictions. For the Channel refuge area, do not treat set, long or droplines, or mullet nets, as ordinary gear. If you are using anything beyond simple rod-and-line, open the current South East restriction map and wording first.

Marine reserves are a separate stop sign. Tinderbox Marine Nature Reserve and Ninepin Point Marine Nature Reserve are no-fishing waters: no fishing and no setting fishing gear. A sea licence, parks pass or boat-ramp access does not open those reserves.

2026 species traps

This page should not be read from old flathead memories. As checked on 5 August 2026, Fishing Tasmania's 2026 sand flathead material listed the South-eastern zone, including the former D'Entrecasteaux Channel / Derwent / Frederick Henry / Norfolk Bays area, as zero bag and zero on-water possession for sand flathead.

Scallops are another trap. A recreational scallop licence is required where scallop fishing is open, but D'Entrecasteaux Channel has its own closed-area status for stock recovery. Also, as checked on 5 August 2026, the 2026 recreational scallop season had closed after 31 July 2026 unless later official advice reopens a specific area.

Rock lobster needs both a licence and a Channel area check. Pot, ring and dive licence types are separate, catch reporting can still be required, and Channel area-management rules can treat pots differently from rings. Do not assume one lobster licence opens every method in every part of the Channel.

Bruny access, boating and shellfish

Fishing Tasmania's Bruny D'Entrecasteaux guide lists popular spots including Dru Point, Margate Wharf, Kettering, Woodbridge, Roberts Point, Dennes Point, Adventure Bay, Cloudy Bay Lagoon, Gordon Jetty, Trial Bay, Huon Estuary and Southport. Use that as a planning map, not as a promise that every nearby reserve or method is open.

South Bruny National Park access is separate from fishing rules. A parks pass, camping booking, fire restriction, track condition or campsite rule can decide the land side of a legal fishing trip. Check Parks Tasmania before planning Cloudy Bay, Jetty Beach, The Neck or other South Bruny access.

For boats, MAST's Bruny, D'Entrecasteaux Channel and Huon River guidance is the safety layer. Marine farms, local ramps, charts, tide, wind and the exposed east and south sides of Bruny can all change the plan.

Food safety is separate again. Fishing Tasmania alerts and seafood-safety guidance should be checked on the day, especially for wild shellfish and scallop roe. Do not use a legal catch limit as proof that shellfish are safe to eat.

For D'Entrecasteaux Channel and Bruny Island, start with the ordinary marine rod-and-line answer: usually no Tasmania sea fishing licence. Then check Shark Refuge Area rules, Tinderbox and Ninepin reserves, sand flathead, scallop, lobster, net-and-line restrictions, seaward boundaries, parks access, boating conditions and seafood alerts.
