Upper Spencer Gulf licence answer

Ordinary recreational fishing in South Australia does not have a general fishing licence checkout. For Upper Spencer Gulf coastal fishing around Whyalla, Point Lowly, Port Augusta, Port Pirie and nearby gulf waters, do not look for a generic SA fishing licence purchase page.

That no-general-licence answer is only the first layer. Upper Spencer Gulf trips still need PIRSA species limits, current closures, marine park zoning, local alerts, gear rules and vessel-safety checks. Snapper closure first

As last verified on 2026-08-05, PIRSA snapper management says West Coast, Spencer Gulf, Gulf St Vincent and Kangaroo Island stocks remain closed, and snapper may only be taken in the South-East fishing zone until 2027-06-30.

Calamari, cuttlefish and Point Lowly

Southern Calamari and Giant Australian Cuttlefish are not the same planning check. PIRSA's current Southern Calamari profile and 2026 temporary closure material need to be checked before targeting or possessing calamari in Spencer Gulf.

Cuttlefish protection is stricter around Upper Spencer Gulf. PIRSA identifies permanent no-take protection for cephalopods in the False Bay and Point Lowly spawning area, and cuttlefish protections apply in Upper Spencer Gulf waters north of the Arno Bay to Wallaroo line. The safer visitor rule is to leave cuttlefish alone in this region unless the current PIRSA page clearly says your exact activity and location are open.

The Point Lowly area is famous for the giant Australian cuttlefish aggregation. That is exactly why this page should not turn into a generic "squid fishing near Whyalla" answer.

Crabs, limits and algal-bloom checks

Blue swimmer crabs are still a live-rule check. As last verified on 2026-08-05, PIRSA lists an 11 cm minimum size across the carapace for blue swimmer crabs, with Spencer Gulf daily limits of 20 per person and 60 per boat. PIRSA treats blue swimmer crab and sand crab limits as combined limits, and undersize crabs must be returned immediately.

Because 2026 algal-bloom and temporary fishing arrangements have affected South Australian waters, use the PIRSA quick lookup and official health advice before crabbing, collecting shellfish or planning an eating-catch trip.

Marine park and sanctuary zones

Upper Spencer Gulf Marine Park covers northern Spencer Gulf waters around Port Pirie, Whyalla and Port Augusta. Parks SA material lists 8 sanctuary zones in the park. Sanctuary zones are no-take areas, and marine park rules sit beside PIRSA fishing rules rather than replacing them.

Use the official marine park map, coordinates or fishing app at the ramp or before leaving mobile coverage. A beach, jetty, boat mark or cuttlefish-viewing area can be legal for access but closed or restricted for fishing, collecting, anchoring or in-water activity.

Parks SA also listed a 90-day exclusion zone from 2026-07-01 between Black Point and Stony Point, including the sanctuary zone. Treat alerts like that as trip-day checks: they are not a whole-gulf permanent fishing ban, but they can change what you can do at a specific place.

Boating safety

Marine Safety SA rules are separate from fishing rules. Required equipment depends on vessel type, length, waters and conditions. Semi-protected waters, unprotected waters, weather, tides and distance from shore can all change the equipment answer.

For trips outside sheltered shore access, use the Marine Safety SA safety equipment checker and lifejacket guidance before launching. Since 2025-01-01, lifejackets worn in South Australia must meet AS 4758 or an accepted international standard; older Australian standards are not enough for worn lifejackets.
