Mary River, Corroboree Billabong and Shady Camp do not start with a paid Northern Territory recreational fishing licence checkout. The NT does not use a general recreational fishing licence for ordinary fishing.

The practical answer is still rule-heavy. This trip sits inside Mary River Fish Management Zone and Mary River National Park planning, so anglers need the local zone rules, parks access, visitor-pass or camping requirements, road and ramp status, possession limits, gear rules and crocodile safety advice.

The Mary River Fish Management Zone is the page that keeps this article from becoming a generic NT licence answer. Use it before fishing Corroboree Billabong, Shady Camp or connected Mary River waters.

As checked on 5 August 2026, NT Mary River Fish Management Zone guidance used local barramundi and king threadfin rules, including maximum-size wording and vessel limits that should not be copied to Darwin Harbour or Daly River without checking their own pages. It also listed Shady Camp barrage method restrictions: within the relevant distance of the barrage wall, check the single-point lure or fly wording before fishing.

The same zone guidance treats nets tightly. Do not carry or use cast nets or drag nets in the Mary River Fish Management Zone unless the current official wording changes. Pots, dillies, landing nets and other gear still need the NT gear page and any park-specific rule.

Park access, ramps and closures

Mary River National Park access is not a fishing licence, but it can still be something you need to buy or book. Check NT Parks visitor-pass rules, camping bookings and the named site you plan to use before travelling. Park alerts, wet-season closures and road conditions can change access to Corroboree Billabong, Hardies, Rockhole, Wildman or Shady Camp.

Boat-ramp status is a separate day-of check. The NT boat-ramp finder, tide, flood and road information matter because a legal fishing plan can still be unsafe or inaccessible.

Do not copy the Daly River seasonal closure into Mary River. Mary River has its own Fish Management Zone and park-access layers. If you see a closure, confirm that it names Mary River, Corroboree, Shady Camp or your exact access point.

Barramundi, threadfin and gear

NT possession limits sit underneath the Mary River zone rules. The general NT possession page, species pages and FMZ wording should all be checked before keeping fish away from the ramp or camp.

For barramundi and king threadfin, the safest user advice is to open the current Mary River Fish Management Zone page before keeping fish. Local minimums, maximums, vessel limits and possession settings are not the same thing as "no NT fishing licence."

For freshwater crustaceans, mud crabs, pots, dillies, cast nets or bait gear, start with the NT pots, dillies and nets page and then apply the Mary River zone rule. Protected species and aquatic pest guidance also matter when handling bycatch, moving gear or travelling between waterways.

Crocodile and flood safety

For Mary River and Corroboree Billabong, use this order: no general NT recreational fishing licence, then Mary River Fish Management Zone, then NT Parks access and bookings, then gear, possession, ramp and crocodile checks. Keep Daly River, Kakadu and Darwin Harbour rules out of this decision unless your trip actually moves there.
