Kakadu permit answer
Kakadu National Park is not a general NT fishing-licence purchase. The Northern Territory does not require a general recreational fishing licence for ordinary recreational fishing, but most visitors to Kakadu need a current park pass.
A Kakadu park pass is entry permission for the national park. It is not a fishing permit, it does not override Kakadu fishing controls, and it does not grant access outside the park or onto Aboriginal land. Kakadu fishing rules
Kakadu has fishing rules that are more specific than the statewide NT no-licence answer. As checked on 5 August 2026, the Kakadu fishing guide lists a general possession limit of 15 fish, with a maximum of three barramundi inside that total. Treat this as a current-trip check: species limits and area restrictions can change.

Waterways, closures and access
Kakadu's access report is part of the fishing decision. Wet-season conditions, road damage, water levels, cultural access and crocodile management can close a route, boat ramp or fishing area even when a park pass is valid.
The official guide identifies special restrictions for some waterways. For example, the West Alligator River and waters upstream of the Kakadu Highway are closed to fishing and boating. The Magela Creek system and other named locations can also have separate fishing or boating access controls. Use the guide's maps, local signs and the latest access report rather than relying on an old trip report.
Park pass and other permits
Buy the park pass through Parks Australia's official Kakadu pass pathway before travelling, then carry the proof required by the current conditions. Pass products, prices and exemptions can change, so confirm the live checkout rather than relying on a saved amount.
Kakadu's permits page covers activities that need separate approval, including some commercial or organised activity. It does not turn routine recreational line fishing into a general fishing-permit purchase. If a trip involves filming, research, a commercial operation, a tour, a special event or other non-standard activity, check the permit pathway early.
Crocodiles and clean gear
Every Kakadu fishing water should be treated as saltwater crocodile habitat. Stay at least 5 m back from the bank, avoid cleaning fish at the water's edge, do not wade casually, and follow current ranger advice and warning signs.
Clean boats, trailers, waders, nets and other equipment before moving between waterways. Aquatic pest and biosecurity advice is separate from a fishing licence answer, especially when bringing gear from another catchment.
