Who usually needs to pay

NSW official transaction pages say a recreational fishing licence is required in NSW fresh and salt water when you are aged 18 or over and want to do listed fishing activities.

Those activities are broader than rod fishing. Service NSW examples include spearfishing, hand lining, hand gathering, trapping, bait collecting, prawn netting, and being on or near NSW waters with fishing gear.

Receipt and proof

Service NSW says you must show your licence fee receipt if asked by an authorised officer. Keep the receipt accessible at the water, either digitally or in another official form that matches your transaction.

If you are exempt, carry the necessary exemption proof instead. Do not rely on a broad card name or family member's receipt; NSW exemptions depend on the exact official category.

Seniors Cards, Health Care Cards and Repatriation Health Cards are not automatic NSW recreational fishing fee exemptions. Use the official exemption wording before deciding not to pay.
