Yarra licence answer

The Yarra River does not have its own "Melbourne fishing licence." It uses Victoria's Recreational Fishing Licence pathway. Most anglers aged 18 to 69 need a Victorian RFL unless an official exemption applies.

Buy through Service Victoria or a VFA authorised agent. Keep accepted proof with you, such as a digital licence, licence email, plastic licence or authorised-agent licence. If you rely on an exemption, carry the card or proof that matches the official wording.

Yarra Bend no-fishing water

Yarra Bend is the local rule that can surprise visitors. Parks Victoria says fishing is not allowed in Merri Creek from the Merri Creek Valley and Escarpment picnic area, or in the Yarra River between the Eastern Freeway and Molesworth Street. That includes Bellbird Picnic Area.

Do not treat canoe or kayak launch access as fishing permission. The same Parks page notes non-motorised launch options, but the no-fishing reach still needs to be respected.

Species, gear and river-to-bay rules

Use the live VFA guide before keeping fish from the Yarra. Depending on the reach, a Melbourne Yarra trip can raise freshwater, estuary and marine-adjacent questions: protected native species, Murray cod or trout seasons upstream, and bream, mulloway or flathead-type checks closer to the lower river.

Equipment rules can change by water type. Do not copy Port Phillip Bay marine line limits onto an inland or river reach unless the current VFA water definition supports it. When a trip moves toward Hobsons Bay, Warmies, Port Melbourne or Williamstown, add the Port Phillip Bay rule layer rather than treating the whole Yarra as the bay.

Boating and port water

The Vessel Operating and Zoning Rules are the practical boating source for the lower Yarra. They separate Yarra River waters, Port of Melbourne waters and other local operating zones. Speed limits, bridge arches, vessel exclusions, swimming restrictions, mooring and berthing rules can all matter before a line goes in.

For powered-boat or kayak trips, use Safe Transport Victoria and Boating Victoria before launching. A fishing licence does not answer vessel safety, ramp condition, commercial shipping, events or temporary waterway controls.

Lower Yarra food-safety check

Eating a fish is a different decision from catching it legally. Victorian health advice for fish caught by family or friends includes specific guidance for the Lower Yarra and Maribyrnong Rivers. EPA water-quality tools and contaminant projects add context, but a water-quality forecast is not a seafood-safety clearance.

If you plan to keep fish, check the current health advice for the exact lower-river area and the people who will eat it, especially children and people who are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning pregnancy.
