Tasmania 2026 Fishing Licence Update: Inland Fees, Season Dates and Sea Licence Year

What changed for 2026

Tasmania licence checks split into two official pathways. Inland angling is managed by the Inland Fisheries Service, while recreational sea fishing licences are published by Fishing Tasmania.

For the 2026-27 inland season, IFS announced that freshwater angling licences are available for the season that runs from 1 August 2026. Anglers aged 14 and over generally need an inland angling licence when fishing inland waters with rod, reel or line.

What did not change

The 2026 inland update does not create one combined Tasmania fishing licence. Inland angling remains an IFS check, while marine activities remain a Fishing Tasmania check.

Ordinary rod-and-line fishing in marine waters remains outside the sea licence system, but the no-licence answer does not override bag limits, size limits, closed seasons, area restrictions or the seaward-limit line between inland and marine waters.

Inland fees to confirm

The IFS angling licence page lists 2026-27 inland licence prices by duration and rod count. Current examples include adult one-season licences for 1 rod and 2 rods, plus shorter 28-day, 7-day and 48-hour options. Junior anglers aged 14 to 17 are listed with no fee.

Sea fishing uses a different year

Tasmania sea fishing is not covered by the inland angling licence. Fishing Tasmania lists the 2025-26 recreational sea licence year as 1 November 2025 to 31 October 2026.

You do not need a licence for rod-and-line fishing in marine waters in Tasmania. Separate recreational sea licences apply to activities such as rock lobster, abalone, scallop, nets and set lines. If you only need a short licence

Tasmania inland angling has short-term products, but Tasmania sea licences do not. That split is the key decision for visitors and holiday trips.

What this means for 2026-27 trips

If your Tasmania trip is mainly trout or inland water, start with IFS and the 2026-27 inland licence year. If it is marine fishing, start with Fishing Tasmania and the 2025-26 sea licence year. If the trip includes both, treat them as two separate checks and confirm the seaward limit or area restriction before you rely on one licence answer.
