Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory

Parent guide: ACT Fishing Licence Guide 2026: Canberra, Lake Burley Griffin and Googong

Before buying ACT gear

For ordinary ACT public waters, there is no general ACT recreational fishing licence. That answer changes if the trip is to Googong Reservoir, where the NSW recreational fishing fee or an exemption applies.

Check the water first: Canberra public lake, trout water, prohibited water, Lake Burley Griffin or Googong. Then buy simple rod-and-line gear that fits that location.

First decision

If your Canberra-area trip is... Check first Gear choice
Ordinary ACT lake, pond or river ACT water category, species, method and access signs. Simple shore rod-and-line kit, ruler, pliers and weather protection.
Lake Burley Griffin ACT fishing rules plus National Capital Authority lake-use or boating conditions. Keep gear shore-friendly unless boating rules and conditions are clear.
ACT trout water Season, water classification, bait, lure, size and bag rules. Do not buy trout-only tackle until the exact water and season are confirmed.
Prohibited or closed water Official ACT source and local signage. Do not buy trip-specific gear for a water that is not open to fishing.
Googong Reservoir NSW recreational fishing fee or exemption, Parks ACT foreshore access and Access Canberra boating rules. Save NSW receipt or exemption proof before buying reservoir-specific gear.
Queanbeyan or other NSW-edge water NSW licence, exemption and rules pathway. Switch to NSW guidance before assuming the ACT no-licence answer follows you.
Boat, kayak or powered vessel Boating, lifejacket, launch and local water conditions. Boat gear is a separate check from the fishing licence answer.

ACT starter kit

Use this table as a packing guide after the water is identified. It does not replace ACT rules, NSW fee proof at Googong, National Capital Authority conditions or boating requirements.

Gear category Best ACT use
Rod and reel combo A simple combo fits many Canberra lake, pond and river starts once the water is open.
Line and leader Useful around banks, snags, rocks and urban lake structure.
Hooks, sinkers and small lures Keep a small kit until the exact ACT water category, species and method rules are clear.
Pliers and cutter Useful for hook removal and line trimming around urban waters.
Measuring ruler ACT and NSW rules still decide whether a fish can be kept.
Small tackle box Keeps a light shore kit organised for lakes and rivers without overbuilding for one reservoir.
Sun and cold-weather basics Canberra lakes and reservoir edges can be exposed in summer and cold in winter.

Checks that change the purchase

ACT check Why it changes the kit
Ordinary ACT water or Googong Googong uses the NSW recreational fishing fee pathway; ordinary ACT public waters do not.
ACT water or NSW-edge water Canberra-area trips can cross into NSW rules quickly, especially around Googong, Queanbeyan and border waters.
Water category ACT guidance separates open waters, trout waters and prohibited waters.
Lake Burley Griffin Lake-use and boating conditions can sit beside fishing rules.
Species and method Size, bag, protected species, bait and method rules matter after the licence answer.
Foreshore or boating access Managed shorelines, boat ramps, powered-boat permits and local conditions can change the practical plan.
NSW fee proof At Googong, the NSW fee receipt or exemption evidence belongs in the kit before reservoir-specific gear.

Gear to delay

Do not buy boat-specific gear, enclosed traps, yabby nets, hoop nets, trout-only tackle or reservoir-focused accessories until you know whether the trip is ordinary ACT water or Googong Reservoir. Googong needs the NSW fee or exemption check as well as ACT foreshore and boating conditions.

Common ACT mistakes

Mistake Better move
Treating all Canberra waters as one no-licence answer. Use the ACT fishing licence guide and identify the exact water.
Applying ordinary ACT public-water guidance to Googong. Open Googong Reservoir and check the NSW fee or exemption pathway.
Buying boat or kayak gear from the fishing answer alone. Check Access Canberra and lake-use conditions before launching.
Buying trout tackle without checking water category. Confirm the season, method and exact water first.
Keeping fish without checking ACT or NSW rules. Use the matching ACT or NSW rule page before retaining catch.
